Among ourselves, we passionately discuss the inane errors that regularly find their way into print. We enthusiastically debate whether media consumers are oblivious, complacent, or just too lazy to demand accuracy. We “tweet” one another links to glaring grammar gaffes, upload to “flickr” photos of misspelled billboard messages, and post to “facebook” examples of problematic punctuation. We are alternately amused and dismayed by the rampant incompetence of advertising agencies, communications directors, and reputable publishers. We have plenty to say!

This weblog will collect and critique public language blunders, so grab your virtual red pen and join the conversation:

You can't proofread your 1x2 ad? Really?

Facebook's sidebar is such a target-rich environment that it may be unfair to pick on its advertisers, but these gems come from universities, so no mercy: I would question the qualifications of any teacher who earned an MS Ed at a school that capitalizes "Online" but not "english" (left), and I would worry about the leadership skills of 140+ generals and admirals who were apparently never taught the difference between "over" and "more than" (right).

  1. I have made a sideline hobby of clicking on those ads and pointing out their errors -- content and mechanical.
It amazes me that people will pay for placement of the ads, but they won't pay anyone to proofread them. Guess they don't care whether anyone actually thinks they're credible.
Or maybe they think no one will notice, due to the widespread lack of grammar skills these days.

  2. Perhaps it is CMU that is churning out all those generals who believe that robust is a verb.
